Your Engagement Ring Needs Maintenance—Here’s How You Do It

10/16/2024

After a year or two on the finger, many brides notice their engagement ring is starting to show signs of wear: bumps and scratches, dull color, or even loose prongs. This is a common occurrence in fine jewelry—especially engagement rings, which are typically worn daily.

The materials that make up your engagement ring require consistent care and maintenance to preserve their sparkle. But don’t fret, these small tasks or annual cleanings are easy to do. However, failing to do so can put the integrity of your ring at risk.

Let’s talk about how you can protect the longevity of your investment:

1. When to Wear, When Not to Wear

Diamonds may be the hardest substance on earth, but they’re not indestructible. The same is true for other precious metals, like gold and platinum. Although these materials are suitable for everyday wear, there are certain activities that may cause damage.

Be mindful about taking off your ring for activities where bumps/scratches may occur. This may include: exercise, sports, sleeping (consistent friction against sheets will wear down prongs), washing dishes, cleaning, gardening, or heavy lifting. In addition, be conscious of situations that include heavy chemicals. These mixtures can cause your metal to leave residue or diminish its sparkle. This may include: swimming, applying makeup/skincare, or cleaning. Simply place your ring in a safe location until the situation permits.

2. Cleanliness Counts

Like any surface, your engagement ring requires consistent cleaning. We recommend cleaning 2-3 times/month to maintain its pristine condition. The safest cleaning methods are easily performed with common household items.

To start, clean your stone with a soft bristled toothbrush and warm soapy water, or use your June-provided cleaning pen. Avoid touching the stone with your fingers, as natural oils or cosmetics can cloud its sparkle or leave residue. And remember: never clean your ring over an open drain.

3. Scheduling Maintenance & Repairs

Ring scratches, micro dents, or color dulling over time is a normal occurrence, and easy to fix. We recommend sending it in to your jeweler for a repolishing every 1-3 years. White gold rings (plated with rhodium) should be replated annually for best results.

Structural issue cases such as loose stones or prongs require more attention. Simply contact your jeweler to arrange a repair. This trained professional will assess the integrity of your ring, tightening prongs or resetting loose stones if necessary. Your ring will be returned to you as good as new.

Colored gemstone rings require the most maintenance. If you choose to set your ring with one of these vibrant hues, consult your jeweler about its unique care properties. Softer gemstones will inevitably show signs of wear or need to be replaced over time.

4. Resize Rarely

Many circumstances can alter the fit of your ring. If you’re noticing changes, contact your jeweler for a resizing. But remember, this should be done sparingly. Excessive resizing can impact the integrity of your ring over time.

Consider the cause of change. Some instances, such as weight fluctuation or moving to a different climate, are more permanent. Seasonal weather changes, pregnancy, or travel, are temporary. Only resize if absolutely necessary.

1-2 resizings is acceptable, but we don’t recommend resizing a ring (up or down) more than 2 sizes. For some rings, resizing is not possible. This is the case for eternity bands, engravings, tension settings, some negative space settings, or rings with flush set stones on the inside of the band.
